  • Natural Object Study with Textural Markmaking Design 2D:  Aston

Size and Medium: 9″ x 12″  Pen and Ink

Objectives:

Experiment with various types of markmaking in pen and ink to convey the illusions of  Form and Texture.

Use chiaroscuro (light and shadow) to create the illusion of Form.

Use Emphasis to create a focal point area of highly defined 3-dimensional surface texture.

To practice the use of pen and ink with calligraphic lines of various weights.

Subject: A natural object with interesting textures and details.  For example: seashells, bones, seedpods, sponges, nutshells, sunflowers, pineapples, mushrooms, driftwood, ect.

Instructions: Place your object on a surface under a directional light and select an interesting area with lots of 3-dimensional surface details. Using pen and ink, draw contour and cross contour lines to convey the illusion of textural form. Draw thin lines where the light hits the object and thicker black lines where the object is in shadow.  The composition will begin as a line drawing.  Next, select an area of the composition to render in full chiaroscuro. Try to make it appear as 3-dimensional as possible by using hatched or crosshatched lines to convey a full range of values from light to dark. This will be the focal area of the drawing.
