Objectives:

1.) To create the illusion of spatial depth through the diminishing intensity of hues, as well as the use of diminishing size and/or linear perspective.

2.) To research and design a triptych using original or appropriated figures in a comic strip style.

3.) To create a progressive rhythm or connected sequential movement within three vertical frames.

4.) To practice the application of color theory through the mixing of tints, tones, and shades.

Medium, Size, and Format

Goauche paint on 9 x 12” bristol or watercolor in three vertical frames placed edge to edge.

Subject Matter

Invent or appropriate a comic figure or figures to use as elements in a composition of your own design. Comics and Pop Art employ many clichés from popular culture,  and some cartoons are obviously intended to be funny. However, your choice of figures and subject matter should still be in good taste, based on the following guidelines:

*Do not use images that degrade women or men.

*Do not use images that portray ethnic groups or racial traits in a way that is derogatory.

*Avoid images that are excessively violent, grotesque, adolescent, or in bad taste.

Composition

Sketch out the composition in pencil by arranging, enlarging or shrinking the figures onto the painting surface in three separate vertical frames. At least one element should be much larger than the others, seen at close range.  Your objective is to create spatial depth through size and color contrast as well as perspective. Arrange a  sequence of elements that move through all three frames. Position the figures at interesting angles or unusual vantage points, carefully considering all negative spaces.  Pay special attention to how the figures intersect the edge of the page.   Obtain instructor’s approval on composition and color choices before painting.

Color

You are attempting to make the figures appear to recede in space through the diminishing intensity of the hues.  Paint the large, frontal figure with the brightest, most intense colors, reserving a few lighted and shadowed areas for tints and shades.  The most distant figure/s will be painted in low-intensity hues with less value contrast.  To hold the project together, and to create a consistent comic book style, all students should apply should apply the paint in a flat and even manner, without blending, using distinct color areas. Use a small pointed brush to surround painted areas with thin black outlines of different weights.

Tint = Hue + White    Tone = Hue + Grey or Compliment,   Shade = Hue + Black or Compliment.
